THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME (or is there?)

I love this week’s topic!  I don’t believe that most Homeowners in an Association have a true grasp of just how important their elections are.  Like Eric, our firm has bared witness to many atrocities leveled by unscrupulous Board Members or CAM’s against uninformed homeowners.

I, in no way mean to belittle our upcoming Presidential Election. I think the candidates do enough of that all on their own. But let’s face it, whoever is elected along with all the other elected legislators, can and will make decisions that impact the country and us in the Grand scheme of things. BUT we can all go home, hide in our abodes and escape the chaos.  After all, aren’t we entitled, per our documents, to “quiet enjoyment”?

That is, unless we are so unlucky that we live in an Association whereby the Board or CAM is out of control.  When electing Board Members, it is imperative that each member understand the individuals they will be placing into the position of making ALL decisions that will inevitably affect our daily quality of life and enjoyment of our home.  Each homeowner should consider seeking answers to these questions BEFORE GOING TO THE POLLS:

  • Has this candidate served on committees and been a productive and harmonious participant?

  • Has this candidate regularly attended meetings and provided valuable insight into community issues?

  • Does this candidate, abide by the rules and regulations of the community?

  • Is this candidate a good neighbor?  Not overly vocal or aggressive.

  • Does this candidate support the efforts of the current Board or agree to disagree in a productive manner?

  • Does this candidate have a personal agenda, which is motivating them to serve as a Board member? Or will they act in the best interest of all homeowners.

  •  Is this candidate someone you would trust with making responsible decisions with the Association Finances?

I would say if the election of your Association Board is not MORE important to you than the Presidential Election, as a concerned homeowner it should at the very least be EQUALLY as important.  After all THERE REALLY IS NO PLACE LIKE HOME!
