NOW IS THE TIME FOR CHANGE

Change is part of life, and it comes in many shapes and forms. For our industry, we usually see a change to our laws on an annual basis. As a Board Member, it can be challenging to keep up with these changes if you aren't professionally managed or connected to a newsletter or training course your association's attorney may offer.

Requiring Board Members to attend a Board Certification may seem overwhelming to some; however, I can say firsthand that it is much easier to work with a Board that has a better understanding of the law and how things should work than one that doesn't. Some may say they won't volunteer for the board if this law passes, and I think that's ok. If you don't have time to take a class for three to four hours once per year, you probably don't have the time to sit on the board. Further, it's become much easier now that courses can be taught online from the comfort of your home.

After the tragedy of Surfside, significant changes are coming to our condos and HOA's, so if there was ever a time for changes, it's now. However, I would like to see the law include who can and can't teach the Board certification course. I've said it in many blogs before, it is my opinion that this course should be conducted by Florida Condominium Association Attornies and no one else. The last thing we all want is board members being trained on legal updates by non-attorneys.
