IS VIOLENCE FASHIONABLE?

According to our mainstream media, violence and destroying other peoples’ property seems to be acceptable – according to some “reporters” even protected by the First Amendment! Where has our society come to?

Thank god I’m not a reporter – meaning I don’t have to be ashamed for my colleagues for making such outright stupid statements.

For me violence is still a criminal act and should be prosecuted accordingly. There are quite a few articles published on our website that report about violence in community associations. We have read reports of fights between board members and owners, destroyed property -- mainly cellphones and laptops.

The question: WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN?

Remember: People defend their homes – and the frustration of owners on both sides of the aisle can get out of hand pretty fast.

For many of us the old saying of: “MY HOME IS MY CASTLE” is still valid. Too many people don’t realize that buying into a community association means giving up many of your rights as homeowner. Shu Bartholomew, the talk show host of the radio–show “On The Commons” puts it a little different. She claims that entering a homeowners’ association means you’re leaving the American Zone.

On the other hand you have some board members who are drunk with power and feel that they are above the law.

Mixing these opposite opinions together is a great recipe for disaster – disaster that can easily turn violent!

Well: This is America! And there are still lots of people in this country who don’t like to be told how to live their lives! And dictators like Adolf, Joseph and Fidel are still widely unpopular among homeowners!

Jan Bergemann Jan Bergemann is president of Cyber Citizens For Justice, Florida 's largest state-wide property owners' advocacy group. CCFJ works on legislation to help owners living in community

associations. He moved to Florida in 1995 - hoping to retire. He moved into a HOA, where the developer cheated the homeowners and used the association dues for his own purposes. End of retirement!

CCFJ was born in the year 2000, when some owners met in Tallahassee - finding out that power is only in numbers. Bergemann was a member of Governor Jeb Bush's HOA Task force in 2003/2004.

The organization has two websites to inform interested Florida homeowners and condo owners:

News Website: http://www.ccfj.net/.

Educational Website: http://www.ccfjfoundation.net/.

We think that only owners can really represent owners, since all service providers surely have a different interest! We are trying to create owner-friendly laws, but the best laws are useless without enforcement. And enforcement is totally lacking in Florida !
