Don’t Shoot the Messenger (or anyone else)

Florida has one of the highest rates of violence reported at Association meetings. Many times the Board will look to the CAM to maintain order during meetings. Unfortunately this often makes Management look like "The Bad Guy".

When facilitating actions directed by the Board, the CAM often times will find the violence turned towards them. This is also the case whenever a CAM is directed by the Board to send violation notices, late letters or any other communication with which a homeowner might disagree or take offense. A good CAM will react diplomatically never arguing, become defensive or disrespectful, simply listening and remain quiet and calm and will often times end the unpleasant confrontation.

But, what if it doesn't? In today's society, we must take every threat seriously. Don't hesitate to call 911! In communities where meetings and tempers tend to run hot, it might be a good idea to have a uniformed police officer present. This lends to a very calm and orderly meeting.

I once heard someone say "The level of violence we experience is dictated by the level of tolerance we show".

As the Board, Homeowners and CAM’s work together to establish what is acceptable behavior they too set the standards of what will not be tolerated which may work to keep incidents from escalating to deadly levels.
