Dirty Laundry

We have all become accustomed to the immediate gratification we get using our ever advancing technology. We can search for a person, get directions, find our favorite recipe, send photos of our family, Instagram pictures of our favorite foods, make a funny video for Youtube or tweet with a famous celebrity! We can communicate around the world in an instant and unlike the saying "What goes up must come down", what is posted on the internet is there FOREVER!

Far too many Homeowners or Condominium Owners are taking to the internet creating blogs or forums whereby they vent their frustrations. What many don’t realize is that while they may be using their right of freedom of speech, they could also be compromising the resale value of their home and the reputation of their community.

Let’s say a Homeowner is unhappy that his Board has to refused to pay for repairs to his vehicle which was keyed, causing damage to his paint. The Homeowner posts a blog about how poorly managed the community is, saying that, neither Management nor the Board will do anything to address the crime, the property looks terrible, the Board just spends the money on senseless stuff rather than security and purchasing a home here was the worst mistake they had ever made!

We have all seen these type of responses when a Homeowner is told NO. Weeks later, the irate Homeowner has calmed down and has forgotten about his blog posting. But a potential purchaser has googled the community name, and guess what they found? Yes, they found the blog that tell them this community is NOT a place they want to live!

The prospective purchaser tells their Real Estate Agent that there is too much crime at this particular community and they go elsewhere. The Real Estate Agent tells other agents what she’s heard and soon the reputation of the community is tarnished and resales slow to a crawl. This happens more than you can imagine. Google your community’s name and see what you find. You might be surprised.
