“We Stand United”, Hardly!

As Americans we stand proud. We love to show our patriotism. During the recent bombings in Boston, Americans united. During the recent disaster in Moore, Oklahoma, we saw Americans displaying our flag amidst ALL of the destruction. One of the most poignant photographs taken after September 11th was the American flag proudly displayed, at the remains of the World Trade Center, as a claim to the world that “WE STAND UNITED”!

So why is it that displaying this awesome symbol of freedom insights so many negative reactions and pits neighbor against neighbor in Condominium Communities and even in Homeowners Associations.

Over the years I’ve witnessed heated debates on whether to allow or disallow these patriotic displays. I’ve come to the opinion that in most cases it is about control and conformity.

As a country, we have seen our veterans return home to be treated with distance and disgrace. WHY IS THIS? It’s because we can’t all agree on the justification of the war. We can’t agree on much of anything really. There are those who believe we should “live and let live” and those who believe” rules are rules” and should never be broken.

So I ask, do we really need laws that permit the displaying of flags and patriotic symbols?
