LEGAL COUNSEL IS GREAT, BUT SOMETIMES LAW ENFORCEMENT IS BETTER

Far too many elections and annual meetings are completely out of control. This seems to be especially true in South Florida! It is almost inevitable that when two hot heads get together, in the same room with opposing opinions, a loud disruptive argument will ensue. Unfortunately, these can become violent.

A perfect example is the current situations we are witnessing as a country and as a result of the recent Presidential election. Yes, we all have a voice, but in the end we must accept the decision of the majority. Yes, we do have the right to freedom of speech, but what does it say about us as a society that individuals feel they have a right to defame, slander, physically attack or perpetuate property damage because we don’t agree with the decision of the majority? As crazy as it is, this behavior has been witnessed even in association elections. Boards and LCAMs who see this as a potential problem during their annual elections should give serious consideration to not only ask legal counsel to run the meeting, but also consider the presence of a uniformed police officer at the meeting. This can often times keep those individuals, who thrive on confrontation and dysfunction, in line and prevent potential physical altercations.

The cost is minimal and can make the process more enjoyable for the attendees.

It’s amazing how an outside authority figure can calm the beasts.
