WHO TO CALL WHEN SOMEONE IS OUT OF CONTROL

As LCAM’s and having served in Property Management for 30+ years, we have dealt with many issues. The most difficult is dealing with those who have some sort of mental illness.

Make no mistake, it is very likely that someone in your community suffers from mental illness and there is a possibility that they will stop taking their medication. Clearly society is not prepared to adequately support these individuals and in many cases the families have written them off. That leaves Management and the Board to deal with the volatile chaos which often follows. So what should you do if you are confronted with such a situation?

  • Seek Legal Counsel. They will advise you on specific actions to take to limit association liability. Follow the attorney’s advice!

  • If an individual is volatile or dangerous, call 911 and then call Legal Counsel. Quite often, their behavior will escalate, going from confused and disoriented to volatile and combative. Never try to solve the problem yourself and never attempt to restrain someone.

  • If you think someone is on this downward spiral, it is okay to look for a solution before it escalates. Unfortunately, it has been my experience that it is almost impossible to have them removed permanently from their home. Do you think there should be a law allowing for such removal?

    Let us hear from you.
