SERVING ON AN ASSOCIATION BOARD. IS IT A LABOR OF LOVE?

My guess is for most of you hard working, dedicated, community focused, board members, the answer is YES! Unfortunately, there are always those individuals who are self-centered, egotistical, dictatorial, that want what they want and don’t care about the effect on others. Sound familiar? Are there are signs that one should look for when assessing the candidates running for board seats? Absolutely!

Here are just a few…..

The “Labor of Love Directors” phrase things using “WE”, “US”, “THE COMMUNITY”!! They seek input. What is your opinion? What would you like to see happen? Their goals are usually to better the community, enhance the lifestyle and increase property values. OH, and they don’t simply sign an affidavit to become certified. They realize knowledge is power, so they actually attend a board certification seminar!

Those “Other Board Members” conversations and actions center on “I”, “ME”, and “MINE”! They make decisions without discussions. They never ask for input. They talk over you and only take on tasks that directly impact them! For example, “I hate dogs”, so let’s become a community of “No Pets Allowed” or “We need to lower fees because mine are too high. Let’s self-manage”

For all of you hardworking Board Members who give 100% to the betterment of all, I wish you a quiet, enjoyable, drama free Labor Day! You deserve it!
